The Words We Choose Affects the Meaning Words that appear to describe individual behavior can affect other people’s interpretations. When observing and recording, it’s best to choose words that describe the behaviors accurately, rather than have an emotional meaning attached. What do you think of when you read or hear the word “Cower”? How about “Slink”? Some other words to consider: Freeze Pushy Patient Retreat How about words that denote groups of associated behaviors? Confident Dominant Assertive Playful Engaged Relaxed Endure Fearful Submissive Appeasing Nervous Reactive Describe each of these interpretations more accurately using specific dog behaviors without adding emotion to them. Ex: confident:  dog stands upright making direct eye contact. Her top line is flat and feet spaced shoulder-width apart. She moves smoothly with no bounce in her step.
