Warning: Internet Explorer
Folks, just read on the internet news sites today that there is a HUGE security hole in Internet Explorer. Now this is nothing new. What's new about this one is that people can't guard against it. Someone (I think in China) has figured out how to get around all of IE's protections, such as they are. All a person has to do is VISIT a web site, and the downloading of malicious code happens automatically. To begin with, IE comes with all the vulnerabilities enabled. It takes a knowledgeable person to know how to disable them, and unfortunately, most people aren't knowledgeable.
A knowledgeable person will disable ALL Active X permissions, and for the newer versions, all dot NET permissions as well. Both of these permissions allow a site to download executable programs to a surfer's computer, and some of these are viruses, and they then proceed to execute themselves and mess up a person's computer (and porn sites are among the worst for doing this, incidentally). IE is so badly designed that when you disable all the Active X permissions, it also won't allow any Flash material to execute. This means you can't see Flash movies, and you can't use YouTube. A lot of the sites that apply for membership have used this innocuous technology, and sometimes not so innocuous.
Recently, my husband's computer got infected. It took over a day to get it cleaned up, and it cost him a day's work and a small sum to someone who does this for a living to finish the job. I know that most people don't have a clue when this happens to them.
So my recommendation is that people here stop using IE entirely until this is dealt with. Just for your information.
